I think that means that we cling to religion because it comforts us which I agree, it does. Opium is disabling. Religion has been strengthening for many people. I also believe that religious belief can be disabling if practiced peacemeal or too passionately
I think it's just a generalization on one person's opionion of religion. Yes, religion can be critized as a poor man's 'way to right way'. It can also lead to sactimonious attitudes, prejudice, discrimination, murder and genocide. Or, salvation, community improvement, social enlightenment, Peace, Growth, etc. It depends on leadership, as is the issue with any socio-political entity with economic power. Sometimes they go up, and some go down.
I don't think opium and religion have much in common.
In most cases religion is almost hereditary. Parents pass their religion on to their children like a disase. Religion is socially acceptable and some people are even proud of calling themselves christians, muslims, etc.
Opium is illegal and I'm sure that no parent will recommend their kids to try it just because it might make them feel better.
Religion is for free. Opium is paid.
Maybe they have one thing in common. They are both addictive.
Whose thought is that by the way? I'll look it up.
Spirituality is Free, Religion has been very expensive in the past, and even today still exibits a high cost to be 'recognized' or 'distinguished' among church goers.
Read "Reformation Europe" if you can stay awake through it and you'll see why the reformation was started in the first place. LOL, was the Church ever ripping people off so they could get a peice of paper that said they would get to go to heaven!
Even today, people are expected to 'donate' to the church they belong to. In the old days, the front pews were not much different they buying a seasonal box at the local super stadium. You wanted to been seen, you paid for the privy of occupying the front seats, poppers and peons, if they were even allowed in the church, would have to stand well to the back where the rich wouldn't have to 'smell' them!
I kind of agree with that.... religion kind of makes people feel at ease when they need to feel at ease, well at least to the ones that are willing to believe or accept the dogmas. Yes, all religions are very expensive and not only in money. Religion is only addictive for a person that has a simple mind, as far as i see it, because in order to be a "good" relgious you need to embrace many "truths" just because yes.... some people say that becoming and accepting a religion is hard but i think is the easy way out to our questions and problems. A placebo effect, that is...
